FM Systems

(Contributed by: Nick S.)

Technology: FM system (radio based hearing aid)

When it was invented:  1991 [3].

Inventor: Andrew James Jamieson Hall [3].

How it works: The FM system uses the transmission of sound over radio waves through the use of a microphone and either ear level receivers, neck loop receivers, or a body- worn receiver [2].

Impact on the Deaf community: These devices allow an amplification of the sound in the environment and can be placed near a spokesperson (usually would be worn), near a speaker, or hooked directly into the sound source. These have been replaced by induction loops in places where there may be large gatherings, but have the advantage of portability and can be taken and used anywhere [1].
